Financial Aid

As a nontraditional student, your financial needs are unique. Rochester University wants to work with you to help meet those needs—and get the education you deserve. Accelerated Learning students pay for their education in three convenient ways:

  1. Financial aid
  2. Personal payment plans
  3. Third-party assistance such as employer reimbursement

The Accelerated Learning program offers adult students the maximum amount of financial aid while keeping tuition rates competitive and affordable. With Rochester University, you can afford to complete your education!

Tuition and Fees are payable online or by check, money order, or major credit card. Checks and money orders should be payable to Rochester University. For a complete list of fees, consult the current registration packet or your adviser.

Steps to Apply for a Federal Student Aid if_right_arrow_476325_white

By closely following and completing the following steps, you will accelerate the financial aid process and maximize the amount of aid you are eligible to receive. Packaging will be based on students’ maximum eligibility for grants/scholarships/loans within the cost of attendance.

1. Apply for a Federal Student Aid ID number.
This will serve as your electronic signature throughout your education process. It’s also necessary in order to complete the FAFSA online. You can view an FSA ID Video if you need help in applying.

2. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after October 1 as possible.
The application can be completed online or mailed in. By filling out the FAFSA, students will be considered for the Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grant, Federal Direct Loans, the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, and the Michigan Tuition Grant. NOTE: No fee is necessary to complete the FAFSA. If you are being asked to pay anyone to complete your FAFSA application, you are not on the correct website.

3. Be sure to include RU’s federal school code (002288) in the #1 spot during step 6 of the FAFSA to ensure that you receive the maximum amount of aid.
Priority deadline is March 1, 2020.

4. Student Financial Services will receive a copy of the student’s FAFSA application 3-5 business days after submission and will review it for completeness and accuracy.
If the student’s FAFSA is approved, they will receive an award letter email outlining the total amount of financial aid they are qualified for during the academic year in which FAFSA was applied for.

If additional information is required for the FAFSA, students will receive an email from our office outlining the updates needed.

5. Student Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling must be completed for first-time borrowers.

6. Review the total cost of attendance, financial aid awards, and any potential out of pocket costs.
(If a student’s award is greater than their total costs, the student will receive a refund check. Refunds from disbursements will be sent to the Business Office for check processing approximately two weeks after the start of the semester). Make sure you have the correct upcoming term selected, then choose to accept or deny all awards for the 2018-2019 Academic Year.

7. Accept/Deny Financial Awards
a. Students will use their Rochester University username and password (created upon application to RU) to log into the student portal, where they may accept or deny their awards by visiting the Financial Services portion of the student portal and selecting My Award Letter.

8. Bookstore Voucher
a. Students with a credit balance will be mailed a voucher when financial aid documents are complete. To opt out, please email sfs@rc.edu.

9. Additional Financial Aid Resources
a. After comparing the cost of attendance with the total financial aid award a student has received, there may be a gap that is required to be paid out of pocket.

b. Options for financing this amount are as follows:
Parents of dependent students wishing to apply for a Parent PLUS Loan may do so online. If approved, the parent must complete the Loan Promissory Notes on that same site. If denied, the student may be eligible for up to an additional $4,000 in loans at the freshman/sophomore college level and $5,000 at the junior/senior college level. Follow the steps to complete the application and credit check. In the School Name section, be sure to select Rochester University.

The results of your credit check will be available immediately. If your credit is approved, you will be given instructions for completing a PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note, if you have not already completed one. If your credit is not approved, you will have the option to (1) not pursue the loan, (2) obtain an endorser, or (3) appeal the credit decision. Note: We will assume that you are requesting the loan for the Fall and Spring 2011-2012 terms. If you would like the loan for only one term, please let us know as soon as possible. Completing the application process constitutes acceptance of the parent loan. Parents may send an email or letter to our office requesting that the loan be reduced or canceled no later than 14 days after the first disbursement. Parent loan amounts will be awarded $500/semester for textbooks. If the parent loan amount requested by the borrower is a larger amount, we will award up to the maximum eligibility amount.

Students may apply for a private student loan.

Students may pay the out-of-pocket cost in full or enroll in a payment plan, which is subject to a one-time payment plan fee. Contact sfs@rc.edu for more information.

Students may select their desired option of payment by selecting My Billing Ledger after logging on to their student portal.

Book Voucher if_right_arrow_476325_white
Payment for all textbooks purchased through the Online Bookstore, must be made at the time of purchase. The online bookstore accepts credit or debit cards. If a student has a zero balance or debit balance due, bookstore purchases will not be permitted to be charged to the student’s account.

Bookstore voucher policy for Accelerated Learning programs at RU
Students in the AL program, that have a credit balance on their student account, after awards are packaged, will be sent a bookstore voucher to their RU email address. To opt-out of receiving the bookstore voucher, please email sfs@rc.edu

Federal Regulations on Bookstore purchases
(i) Provisions for books and supplies. (1) An institution must provide a way for a Federal Pell Grant eligible student to obtain or purchase, by the seventh day of a payment period, the books and supplies required for the payment period if, 10 days before the beginning of the payment period—(i) The institution could disburse the title IV, HEA program funds for which the student is eligible; and(ii) Presuming the funds were disbursed, the student would have a credit balance under paragraph (e) of this section. Types of Federal and State Aid

Federal Pell Grant
Eligibility: Need-based, awarded to undergraduate students. Additional Department of Education criteria may apply.
Amount: $5,920 maximum for 17-18. Does not have to be repaid.

Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
Eligibility: Need-based, via FAFSA. Awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional need, subject to federal funding guidelines. Students must qualify for a Pell grant to receive this grant.
The college receives a limited amount of funds, therefore early application is important to guarantee the student’s award.
Amount: $500 maximum. Does not have to be repaid.
Deadline: June 15

Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized)
Eligibility: Need-based.
Amount: Freshmen: up to $3,500. Sophomores: up to $4,500. Juniors and Seniors: up to $5,500.
Details: Subsidized Stafford Loans have a variable interest rate. Repayment begins 6 months after graduation. Students are granted up to 10 years for repayment. Students are not responsible for interest while enrolled in college on at least a half-time basis.

Federal Stafford Loan (Unsubsidized)
Eligibility: Need-based, via FAFSA. Students not eligible for Subsidized Stafford Loans may borrow funds through the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan program.
Amount: Freshmen: up to $5,500. Sophomores: up to $6,500. Juniors and Seniors: up to $7,500.
Details: Students are responsible for interest accrued during in-school deferment. Repayment on the principle begins six months after the student ceases to be enrolled on at least a half-time basis, with a repayment schedule of 10-30 years. Interest payments are the responsibility of the student for the entire duration of the loan.

Federal Work-Study
Eligibility: Need-based, via FAFSA.
Amount: Varies.
Details: Students will be awarded if they demonstrate need; however, in order to receive funds, students must apply and be hired in a student worker position.

Michigan Tuition Grant
Eligibility: MTG is awarded by the state of Michigan on the basis of financial need and enrollment in a private Michigan college.
Amount: $1,830 maximum – does not have to be repaid
Deadline: June 30

Michigan Tuition Incentive Program (TIP)
Eligibility: TIP is awarded on the basis of financial need. Students must be enrolled in an Associate Degree program to be eligible for Phase I TIP.
Amount: $2,876 maximum – Phase I and $2,000 maximum – Phase II. Does not have to be repaid.
Deadline: June 1
Apply: Complete FAFSA with school code (002288) Rochester University listed as your first choice. If eligible, students will receive a letter from the State of Michigan.
