STREAMING: WHO ARE HUMANS THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF THEM?

What you think it means to be human in God’s world matters. How we worship, evangelize, provide pastoral care, and many other practices of ministry depend on how we answer this question. What we think it means to be human also reveals a lot about what we believe about God. This question presses on us now because long-held beliefs are coming up short, and new perspectives are emerging. In fact, a consensus may be emerging across disciplines to the important question, “who are humans that you are mindful of them?” We have invited a gifted group of thinkers to help us reflect from a variety of perspectives: psychological, philosophical, theological, and biblical. As always, Streaming will move us down the waters of understanding by way of conversation. Come be a part of this important discussion.

Presenters

Lauren teaches theology at Lipscomb University, where she has quickly gained a reputation as an outstanding teacher. Her published articles demonstrate a breadth of interests: inter-religious dialogue, sacramental theology, revelation, biblical hermeneutics, and worship. In all these areas, she brings erudition and insight which befit her training in both theology and philosophical hermeneutics. We are extremely happy to introduce Lauren to our Streaming community as this year’s Bert Bryan presenter.

Richard is very familiar to our Streaming community, and uniquely equipped to address this year’s theme. He chairs the psychology department at Abilene Christian University, and is a noted author and blogger. His academic interests revolve around the intersections of psychology and theology. Books like Unclean, Stranger God, The Return of Old Scratch, and Hunting Magic Eels, all pose questions of spirituality against the backdrop of psychological insight. We are thrilled to have him back this year. Richard is this year’s Stuart Love presenter.

Chris serves the Woodmont Hills Church in Nashville as Worship Minister. He’s famous around the Streaming crowd for the years he spent as Director of Campus Spiritual Life at Rochester. He holds two degrees from Rochester, including the MRE in Missional Leadership, where he distinguished himself as an insightful theologian. He just capped his academic sojourn by completing the Doctor of Ministry at Lipscomb University. In everything he does, Chris brings a passion that inspires others. He will lead our worship at Streaming and participate in speaking roles throughout the program.

Many of the employees here at Rochester Christian University know David because of his long tenure as a professor of preaching, during which he directed Streaming’s predecessor, The Rochester Sermon Seminar. David now serves as Executive Director of the Center for Christianity and Scholarship at Lipscomb University. In that capacity he directs the annual Christian Scholars Conference, a significant gathering of Christian scholars across the spectrum of academia. David is a sought preacher and lecturer, a brilliant craftsman. We are happy to welcome David back to campus, but are even happier that he has shared his son Luke as Rochester’s Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations.

Her bio aptly describes who Mallory is and what she does. She is a “writer, speaker, spiritual director, and peacemaker.” Blessed are all those things. Her recent publishing includes a new book, God Is, a beautiful work of wisdom anchoring our lives in the reality of God. Mallory preached for us before at Streaming and made us like being convicted by a prophetic, poetic Word. Welcome back, Mallory.

Natalie is the Assistant Director of the MRE in Missional Leadership at Rochester Christian University. She serves in many capacities in that role, including providing spiritual direction for MRE cohorts and teaching the course Salvation and Human Identity. Her recently completed doctoral work focuses on racial justice in the Episcopal church, and featured a section on the imago Dei. We are excited to have her share this work with us.
