This spring Rochester University will build again in Lake Norcentra Park. The Slater-Montgomery Family Chapel, which will sit adjacent to the old gymnasium, will give the community a place to gather for chapel, weddings, worship, and outdoor events.
With this chapel, donors Kenneth and Donna (Montgomery) Slater are honoring the long involvement of both their families in the establishment and sustainment of RU.
Donna attended Michigan Christian College in the 1960s and is a lifetime member of the Associates. Ken served on the college’s board of trustees.
Donna’s grandfather, Gerald Montgomery, was a charter member of the North Central Christian College board of trustees, and her grandmother, Ollie, helped establish a women’s auxiliary. Donna’s parents, Leonard and Martha Montgomery, continued the support with involvement in the Associates and with a donation of books in Martha’s name after her death.
Ken’s parents, Harold and Helen Slater, helped establish the college. Ken remembers taking long drives from Dearborn to Rochester to see the estate that would become the campus. Harold supported the college by encouraging congregations to become involved in the institution’s development, and Helen served as an events chairperson and president of the Associates. The couple also established an endowed scholarship to help students. RU honored Harold and Helen Slater as Philanthropists of the Year in 2008.
Ken and Donna said, “We are delighted to honor our families with this special events chapel. We really believe it will be a gathering place for positive activities for our campus and for the community.”
